Checklist for User Web Page Setup
Items Needed:

  • A separate Web Space package (contact customer service department to order).
  • A Web Publishing program to create and modify your Web Pages. Web Pages, or HTML pages, are actually text files that contain instructions that tell your browser what to do. Being text files, they can be edited with any text editor (such as Windows Notepad or DOS's edit) by an experienced HTML programmer. For the beginner there are many WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Web Publishing Packages available. There are commercially available ones that you can mail order or pick up at your local software store and there are, also, shareware ones that you can download from various download sites. Many of the Web Publishing Packages that are available come with FTP clients for the transferring of files between your local computer and your Web Space on the webserver. If you acquire one of the previously mentioned packages that includes an FTP client, you do not need to acquire an FTP program as mentioned below.
  • An FTP program to transfer the files in your computer to your Personal Web Space. Here we have included instructions specific to WS_FTP32 (for Windows-95).

  • Click here to download WS_FTP32 (you may use any FTP program).
  • The Web Pages that you will create.

Using WS_FTP32 to access your Personal Web Space.

Step One - Connecting to your user directory

Click on the WS_FTP32 icon. When the WS_FTP32 program starts up you will first be in the Session Profile window. This is where you will define the FTP connection parameters. Since the FTP program can be used to access other FTP servers, you will need to assign a name to this profile.

In the Profile Name box enter the name you wish to assign to this profile, or setup. For simplicity (and clarity) sake, enter Under Host Name enter In Host Type select UNIX (Standard). Enter your FTP login name and password into the User ID and Password boxes. Leave the Account Box blank. Make sure Anonymous Login is NOT checked. Check Save Password box if you wish to save your password. If you elect to save your password, anyone who can sit in front of your computer may access (FTP) your web area. If you choose not to save your password, you must enter your password each time you FTP to your web area. If you elect to Auto-Save Config, any changes you make to this Session Profile will automatically be saved. If you elect not to check Auto-Save Config you must click on the Save button if you make any changes to this entry. The Initial directory boxes are optional. You may specify which directories (folders) you wish to be "in" when this FTP session is invoked. Normally your initial directory on the Remote Host (our webserver) would be /home/johndoe (again, replacing johndoe with your FTP login name). If you choose not to enter an initial directory for the Host, it will default to /home/johndoe (with johndoe being your FTP login name). The initial directory for your LocalPC would be the directory (or folder) where your web pages are stored on your computer. Click on "OK" to gain access to your Personal Web Space. When you login to the server you will always start in the same directory. This directory is named the same as your login name and will henceforth be referred to as your user directory. Once you have established an FTP session (linked to our webserver) click on the Options button at the bottom of the window. Click the Program Options button. In the bottom left hand corner (in the Double Click box), select view. Then click on the Save button to save these settings. Next click on the Session Options button. In the bottom left hand coner (in the Transfer Mode box), select Auto Detect. Then click on the Save button. When you are back on the Options Window, click on the Exit button. You are now set to transfer (FTP) your web pages up to the webserver.

Step Two - Uploading your Web Pages

FTP your web pages to your user directory. The left-hand pane represents your local machine (your computer) while the right-hand pane represents the remote machine (our Internet server). If the left pane (your computer) is not showing the web pages that you have created navigate your local drive to find the directory where your web pages are stored. Your screen should look similar to the example.

WARNING!!! WHEN YOU COPY FILES UP TO THE WEBSERVER, YOU WILL OVERWRITE ANY FILES OF THE SAME NAME. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP COPY OF THESE FILES. To copy (or publish) your web pages, highlight all the files to be copied to your Personal Web Space, click on the right-arrow between the two panes, This will copy all the highlighted files from your hard drive (left pane) to your user directory (your Personal Web Space on Camtel.Net). All of the highlighted files in this directory will be published under the following URL: where johndoe is replaced by your user name.
